How to Create Free Vias in a Trace

1.   Select Tools → Connections and Create the trace with the required net name.
2.   Select ‘Edit Via’ → ‘Create Via’ option.
3.   Place the via at the end of the trace so that the via gets attached to the trace.
4.   The required connections can be made within the inner layers too.

EDIT VIA

This is used, either to change a group of vias or to relocate vias which is already created. There are options to create vias, delete unconnected vias, change via padstack etc.

Operation

To relocate a via, Select this function tool and click on the via. The via gets tagged to the cursor. Click again, to place the via in the current cursor position.
To change a group of vias, select this function tool. Select a via type from viapad drop down list in Sizes toolbar. Select the vias to be changed by drawing a block in the layout. The vias inside the block will be changed to the specified via type displayed in viapad. The edited vias are shown ‘selected’ after the operation.

Create Via - F1

This option allows creating vias at the required locations. A typical instance where it is required is a pin of an SMD component required to be grounded where a different layer is assigned as ground. Here mere creation of a via serves the purpose.

Operation

Select this option and click on the graphics area to get a via pad tagged to the cursor. Move the cursor to the required location and click to place it.

Delete Free Via - F2

This option allows deleting unconnected vias from the board.

Operation

Click on the via to be deleted. The via gets tagged to the cursor. Now select this option or press F2 to delete the selected via.

Change Via - F3

This option allows changing the padstack type of a created via.

Operation
Select the required padstack from the dropdown list box found in Sizes toolbar

. Now, click on the outside edge of the preferred via. The change made can be viewed by selecting View | Layout | True size option.
