Q2.How do I get Windows like editing features in EDWin?
EDWinXP/2000 now has editing features which can be accessed by selecting an object with Bullets (CTRL + CLICK of any object to select / bullet it). After bulleting an object, right click displays the context menu. It is possible to Cut, Copy, Paste, Pack, Unpack, Change the X, Y position, change the reference, change size and literally do most editing operations in the property window which is displayed. Please refer Getting Started with EDWin for more details.
Q3.How do I set the path to EDWin XP/2000 files?
EDWin XP/2000 creates its own default directories at the time of installation. The names of the sub directories (Sys, Lib, Job etc) cannot be changed during installation. However, the directories can be changed from EDWinXP/2000 Main ? Options ? Files ? Folders.
Q4. On clicking Options I get the error “Can’t read file: \EDWin 2000\SYS\NONE.APT”
In taskbar Startup settings, set the path for EDWin XP/2000 Main as “: \EDWinXP\EDWinXP.EXE” “: \EDWinXP\Sys”. Right click on EDWin XP/2000 icon in the desktop and select Properties. Select the Shortcut tab. In the Target text box, set the path as “: \EDWinXP\EDWinXP.EXE” “: \EDWinXP\Sys”.
Q5.Is there any way to zoom up a particular portion?
To zoom up a particular area, press SHIFT + B or the “Zoom Block” tool in the Standard toolbar and select the area.
Q6. Does the cursor snap to nodes nearby?
The assessment of the location and distance placement of graphic items may be allowed with respect to the grid and snap value set in the Standard toolbar. i.e. the cursor would snap to the nearest nodes according to the grid and snap value. Preset grid values from the drop down list box are selected, alternatively any value between .0001” to 1.000” may be entered in the Grid combo box. Select any grid from the available three grids for display.
Press Shift+Z to toggle between Long/ Short Crosshair cursors while performing an operation such as Relocate, Repeat, etc.
Design (Project) can be save/load in ASCII format but not in binary. Library cannot be save/load in both formats.
The utility ‘Conversion Manager’ in EDWin XP/2000 allows converting all your EDWin 16 bi/ EDWin32 designs and libraries to EDWin XP/2000. This allows you to convert part, symbol and package libraries and also databases to EDWin XP/ 2000 acceptable format. To invoke this utility, right click on the task EDWinXP and select Conversion Manager from the Function list.Refer Import Libraries and Databases
Q10. How do I import a PSpice netlist to EDWin XP/2000?
Right click on the task Project [MAINHIER] in the project explorer and select ‘Import SPICE Netlist ‘ from the Functions list. This utility allows to import circuit (.cir) files created in any SPICE simulator to EDWin XP/2000. Converting the imported file data to EDWin XP/2000 project generates the Schematic diagram. The entire Instance parameters and Model parameters are set during conversion. This routine deletes the currently loaded EDWin XP/2000 project upon start. Hence it is to be ensured that the project is saved before invoking this application. If any subcircuit is present in the imported data, then a corresponding hierarchy will be created for each subcircuit line (.subckt). This import is possible only if all the parameters in the spice netlist to be converted are already defined in EDSpice i.e. this should be defined in the dictionary file.
Q11. Can we use EED3 components in EDWin? Is there any way to convert them?
You can use EED3 components in EDWin. EDWin XP/2000, right click on the task EDWin XP/2000 --> --> Conversion Manager -->Select the tab EEDIII Conversion. Select EED3 files from the Input file box. In Output Library, the path is selected to save the conversion. Click the CONVERT button for the conversion to take place. The database may also be imported from EEDIII by clicking the IMPORT button.
Q12.Can you please give a detailed explanation on hierarchy?
Hierarchies in EDWin are a way of splitting up and
organizing, large electronic projects into a systematic set of manageable small pieces.
This is applicable only within the Schematic Editor.
Create the main Hierarchical symbol in Library Editor (Schematic Symbol only) and assign
entries to it, submit it to the Search Sequence and load it in Schematic Editor.
EDWin
Main --> Project
--> Add / Delete Circuit
--> Create New Circuit à Enter name of new circuit
to be assigned to the Hierarchy in the text box, say Hier1 and click “Add”
-->
Accept to close this window. Schematic Editor
-->Second function tool “Hierarchy
Down”
--> Click the main Hierarchical symbol, in the dialog which appears, select the
circuit
--> Apply. Now the symbol is assigned to a circuit. The additional circuit appears
in the Project Explorer with its name in brackets. Edit it’s page to find a net hook
for each entry of the symbol. Connect the net hooks at the appropriate entries in the
circuit. In case you make changes to the main Hierarchical symbol in Library Editor, do
not forget to reassign the hierarchy so that the changes will appear in the circuit.
Schematic Editor
--> Second function tool “Hierarchy Down”
--> Second Option Tool
“Reassign Hierarchy”, click the Hierarchical Symbol and reassign the circuit.
All the hierarchies created will be listed in the project explorer of EDWin XP/2000. You
may easily navigate between the hierarchies from the project explorer. The actual process
of navigation is as follows: From the Schematic Editor select the tool Hierarchy Down from
the Component editing toolbar (Tools ? Components). Two option tools, 'Hierarchy Up' and
'Reassign Hierarchy’ will now be shown. After selecting the appropriate one, click on
any entry of the symbol you wish to view one hierarchical level down or up. (Remember that
you can move upward only upto the level you have set as the current hierarchy). The
Schematic Editor window will now change to show the schematic of one hierarchical level up
or down, as selected. It is the same for EDSpice simulator.
Both EDSpice and Mixed Mode simulators can simulate both analog and digital circuits i.e. both are mixed mode simulators. Mixed Mode simulator is the characteristic Simulator of EDWin while EDSpice is based directly on Berkeley SPICE 3F5 and XSPICE from the Georgia Institute of Technology. In addition to the XSPICE extensions, EDSpice continues to support capabilities and models of SPICE2. This is specifically meant for users who are familiar with Spice.
Q14.
Why do I have problems while working with Postscript printers in Windows NT and 2000?
While printing from EDWin32 and EDWin 2000 using Postscript drivers, the system cannot
print the lines in the precision (true size) specified. This is a known problem in
Microsoft Windows NT and 2000 and it is mentioned in their technical documentation. We
have tested this with a postscript viewer, and the result is the lines are very thin line
rather than in true size.
To overcome this, use Win95/98 kernel in which we have explicitly handled these situations
for printing (only)
1.Take a backup of /EDWin2000/Edwkrn2k.dll.
2. EDWin 2000 CD ROM -> EDWin 2000 -> Edwkrn2k.9x_ -> Rename this to Edwkrn2k.dll
and place it in the /EDWin 2000 folder
3. Carry out the printing job
4. Rename the 9x kernel to its original name "Edwkrn2k.9x_", restore the
original Edwkrn2k.dll.
Q15.
When I try to open Waveform Viewer, the following message
appears: " ActiveX component can't create object". My Operating System in
Windows 98.
This is because DCOM is not updated in your machine. The Waveform Viewer will start
working by executing the EDWin 2000 CD /Tools/DCOM/DCOM98.exe. For those who are using
Windows 98 SE,and download it. This issue remains unresolved for Windows Me though Waveform Viewer will
work if updated with the file supplied with the CD. This file however, is meant to be used
in Win9x machines. We are not aware of the conflicts which will arise by using DCOM98 in
Windows Me.
